Lots of back and forward with his team and also Paypal tech support to get reference payments disabled. Slow but got there in the end. For the last 6 weeks (admittedly including the break over Xmas/new year), PayPal has been unable to solve a problem of the wrong 4-payment calculations showing on my website when Pay in 4 is activated. I had a call and the problem was clear. Week later another call but the person coming to that call still had no solution. It really shouldn't be this difficult. I was looking for a Product Selector custom JS code to use across templates on my Shopify website. The demo video only showed how to select the JS code for a single template.
